Did you see the piece about the West Virginia legislature exempting a school mascot from the “Safe Schools Act?”
The school is Parkersburg South High School and its mascot is a Revolutionary War patriot. Part of the costume/uniform is a musket. The West Virginia legislature has written the patriot into the law as exempt from the SSA because the musket is “part of his uniform.”
I am astonished at the number of otherwise sane people in our governments who fail to understand this simple fact. Outlawing legally owned and legally carried firearms in and around schools, and any other business or institution, does nothing to make them safer. It does, in fact, have the exact opposite effect. Just exactly how, pray tell, does outlawing legally owned and carried firearms make a school safer? All it does is make it easy for some nutcase to stroll through the school and campus, taking target practice as he goes merrily on his way, and kill 30 or 40 students with impunity; knowing full well that no one on campus can stop him because he has the only gun there. It should be called the Safe Mass Murderer’s Act.
I just pray that at some point in time this idiotic trend reverses itself.
In Detriot it apparenly has been reversed, as another article in today’s Outdoor News is about the rise in justifiable homicides. It says, “Justifiable homicide in the city shot up 79 percent in 2011 from the previous year, as citizens in the long-suffering city armed themselves and took matters into their own hands.”
All I can say is, It’s about time!”
There is more than one way to get companies to send you free guns to test and reeivw, but all of them require that you do essentially the same thing: provide the company with a good value in terms of advertising and product visibility vs. the cost of giving your the product.This could mean many things: you write for a magazine, you start a blog that gets many views per month, you are a competitive shooter who’s picture will end up in magazines firing the companies’ gun, you are an instructor who teaches many new students about guns and can recommend products(can you see a conflict of interest here?), etc get creative because the market is pretty full.Whatever you do, keep in mind a few things. Your reeivws must be professional because you’ll be representing the company. Your reeivws must be thoughtful and accurate, but keep in mind no company will give you products if you bash them or give them negative press(can you see a ethical conflict here?). You’ll need to emphasize the products name and brand. You’re production values will need to be good. All in all, you’ll have to be providing advertising services to the company. You’re best bet is to start by requesting a few lower ticket accesories or items to start and move up from there.

Get an actual job as a gun reeiewvr for some credible organization. This will require an extensive background in firearms and most likely some skill at writing either technical or popular. You don’t start from the top of the ladder, you climb it one rung at a time.You might want to look for internet forums dedicated to firearms to help your skill set and get some ideas on the field of firearms. You can also find sites that do reviews and look at the qualifications of the reeiewvrs. (You will usually find some degrees attached to the name or an extensive history as a (firearm) writer or instructor of some type)Or you could become another one of the internet reeiewvrs who shoot anything they can borrow and blog about it. They provide comic relief for people who know firearms. (I just saw one testing’ the Judge got some laughs there, it kills watermelons quite well but he’s never heard of ballistics gel.)
