You need an 11th-hour Christmas gift for that special boater in your life? Better act quick – you only have a couple weeks left. Lucky for you, there are some zany new items out there that will bring a smile to any boat owner’s face.
1. The Aquabotixs HydroView. This is an underwater ROV, made for recreational use. It’s an eight pound, 19-inch long robot sub, which can travel at up to five knots (or two in reverse) for up to three hours on its rechargeable battery. You can order it with between 50 and 300 feet of cable, and it can dive to depths of up to 150 feet. Once submerged beneath the surface, its high-def camera will beam back images of the sunken world. You use your Apple or Android smart phone or table to control it, by tilting left, right, up, or down. The HydroView even has LED lights, to illuminate the depths. Just how much will this little submersible gadget cost you? A mere $3,000. Check it out at the Aquabotixs web site.
2. The Aqua View Claw. Mere exploration of the undersea world isn’t goo enough for you? You also want to be able to recover your deep discoveries? Then take a look at Aqua Vu’s new invention, The Claw. This unit combines an underwater video-cam with a robotic hand that can grab goodies weighing up to 40 pounds at the press of a button, and haul ‘em back to the surface. It has a 75′ long cable with a breaking strength of 200 pounds, and comes with a seven-inch LCD viewing screen. How much will you spend this on this crazy Christmas present? A paltry $800.
3. The Hobie Mirage Revolution 11. This one’sonly crazy because of the cost, but if there’s a kayak angler on your “good” list and you’re willing to part with about $2,000 (price varies depending on options and rigging) you can give the gift of fishing in the form of the Mirage Revolution 11. This new model is a scaled-down version of the classic Mirage 13, which can be had with such goodies as Mirage Drive (you paddle with pedal-power instead of a paddle), rod holders, a livewell, and even a Bimini top.
