Wanna see 350,000 speckled trout? (Video)

Last night I had the great privilege of spending time on the water with my longtime outdoor writing comrade (and amazing artist) Sam Caldwell. We were guided by Jennifer Bixby and Jonathon Daigle of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s Sea Center Texas.

Sam and I were working on stories for our publications (TF&G and CCA’s Currents) about flounder collection and the new boat CCA helped fund for the fine folks at Sea Center. We were able to shoot some photos and get a better idea of how flounder collection will go in the future.

When we got back to the hatchery around 11 p.m. Jennifer took me into the brood room to let me experience the amazing sounds of redfish and speckled trout “drumming”. Wow! The reds sounded like the bass drum intro to Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man”. It was very metal!

Then on the way out, I noticed a small tank full of some sort of fry. As it turned out they were speckled trout from Sabine Lake. Watch the video and be amazed.

Thanks to Jonathan for getting wet and tired for us on the bay and to Jennifer for the redfish metal experience.

By the way, the tiny, tiny dots in the water are trout.

Here’s a bonus still with a bunch of the little specks.
