Coastal Fish Kill (Ike remembered photos)

While searching for some particular photos today, I came across some I took after returning home from Hurricane Ike.

The streets of Orange and West Orange were covered with fish. I shot these two photos in the Cove area of Orange about three miles from my house. There were redfsh all over the roads, in yards and stuck in fences along with trout, flounder, millions of croaker and of course countless menhaden and mullet.

We are about to enter hurricane season and this is a reminder of what a big storm can do. The destruction of human lives and home is the worst result but there is no denying the immediate toll on our fisheries.

In a future blog I will talk about how storms can actually benefit redfish in the long run but for now enjoy these photos from three years ago.
