Albinism is rare in most animals but albinism in marine mammals is super rare. Surviving in a dangerous ocean is difficult for an animal that sticks out like a sore thumb.A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that while fishing on Lake Calcasieu south of Lake Charles, La. I captured this photo of a beautiful albino dolphin, locals have affectionately named “Pinky”. I thought I would give a little back story this week since I have received lots of inquiries about this unique creature.

Originally photographed by Calcasieu fishing guide Capt. Erik Rue a few years ago the animal has caused quite a stir among marine mammal experts who have noted they have never observed a dolphin like this one.

“Pinky” was feared to have left or perished in Hurricane Ike but was spotted soon after and has been thrilling anglers who occasionally get a glimpse while seeking reds and specks just across the Texas border.

This unique creature sports deep red eyes and a body that is entirely pink. In this photo you can see the fin of another dolphin it was feeding with. There were four in a pod that were working a school of mullet.
