Ever have random outdoors thoughts?
I do.
Here’s a few that are all over the map.
There must be something like 20 billion menhaden in the Sabine system now. It seems like every single stretch of water is covered with them like last year. The vastness of the numbers is mind-boggling.
If snapping turtles are mean, softshells are the devil. Without exception they try to bite when handled and their super long necks make it hard to get hooks out when you catch them on accident. Be careful if you catch one.
The lack of big speckled trout in most of our backwater marsh ponds on the Upper Coast is baffling. While they are occasionally caught, similar areas along Laguna Madre would be loaded with big specks. Is there another fish with as many nicknames as the grinnel?
There is cypress bass, dogfish, mudfish, mud marlin and choupique.
Am I missing any?
Finally, everyone is a wildlife specialist of some kind of television these days. You have gator men and even lobster men. We are bound to run out of cool animals for people to specialize in. Before long the latest series will be something like, “Chronicles of the Armadillo Whisperer”.
