DU Sporting Expo

Over the last three days I had the honor and privilege of taking part in the Ducks Unlimited (DU) Sporting Expo at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine.

Texas Fish & Game (TF&G) magazine shared a booth with Academy Sports & Outdoors and I signed a few books, met lots of our readers from all over the place and conducted seminars along with editor-in-chief Don Zaidle and TF&G writers Bob Hood and Paul Bradshaw.

I just wanted to give DU kudos for working so hard for wetlands conservation and for putting on such a wonderful show. The building was wall to wall waterfowl outfitters, call makers, decoy manufacturers, dog trainers, mud boat dealers and everything in between.

More importantly they are a group on a mission to conserve our wetlands and events like this and the national banquet held Saturday night (which raised over $140,000 via auction for the cause) are making a difference.

I spoke with Mike Checkett, DU biologist and television host and he was heading down to southern Louisiana at an area DU biologist are mobilizing to see what they can do about the oil spill’s damage to wetlands crucial for wintering waterfowl and native mottled ducks.

I’m proud to support DU, was proud to be part of this event and feel a little better about the oil cleanup knowing DU biologists are on the scene with their common sense but highly passionate approach to wetlands conservation.
